Why in News?

  • India is hosting the 90th General Assembly (GA) of Interpol in NewDelhi , 2nd time since the Interpol came into existence.

About

  • An intergovernmental organization with 195 member countries.
  • Established in 1923 as International Criminal Police Commission (ICPC) and headquartered in Lyon, France.

Organisation

  • Headed by president who is elected by GA for a tenure of 4 years.
  • Day to day activities by Secretary General, elected by GA for 5 years.
  • Every member-country is the Interpol’s face in that country.
  • The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is the nodal agency in India.

Mandate

  • Share and access data on crimes & criminals and provide back-end technical assistance to law enforcement agencies in 3 categories-
    • Counter-terrorism.
    • Organized and emerging crimes.
    • Cybercrime.
  • It is not a front line-police force or investigation agency.
  • Interpol is a global agency but not meant for dispute resolution.
  • The Interpol issues various notices which are international requests for cooperation or alerts.
