PM Narendra Modi had set forth a financial assistance of Rs.1000 crore on 28th May in total to the states of Odisha, West Bengal and Jharkhand in the aftermath of cyclone Yaas.

Very Severe Cyclonic Storm Yaas was a rather strong tropical cyclone that made landfall in Odisha and also brought significant impacts to West Bengal and Jharkhand.

An ex-gratia of Rs2 lakh in case of a death and Rs50, 000 for those injured in the cyclone has been announced by the government.

Climate change has attributed to cyclone in western India too due to rising temperatures in the Arabian sea whereas cyclones in the Bay of Bengal have been a regular phenomenon. It has been observed since ancient times that the ratio of cyclones emerging in the Arabian Sea to the Bay of Bengal region has been 3:7. Government is working towards more advanced scientific management of disasters undergoing major change in mitigation efforts and preparedness.

This past week, cyclone Tauktae caused large scale loss of life and property in Maharashtra, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Daman and Diu, and Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Kerala, Karnataka and Goa. Apart from damage to houses and crops, power and communication poles were uprooted, and shipping vessels and crafts’ moorings collapsed down.
